How to Screen Skilled and Semi-Skilled Workers Remotely

Last reviewed: 1 August 2026

When candidates are based in Nepal and the hiring employer is overseas, screening has to happen remotely and it has to be thorough. This guide covers the practical tools available to employers — video interviews, trade-test demonstrations, document checks — and the questions worth asking any sourcing partner about how their screening actually works. It pairs well with our overview of why employers source workers from Nepal.

Video interviews

A structured video interview remains the starting point. Beyond general conversation, use it to verify specifics: dates and duration of previous roles, tools or machinery the candidate has actually operated, and how they describe handling a typical problem on the job. Where language is a factor, confirm whether an interpreter was present and note that in your records.

Practical and trade-test demonstrations on video

For skilled-trade roles — welding, electrical work, machine operation — a spoken interview alone is not enough. Ask for a recorded demonstration of the candidate performing a relevant task, or a live video walkthrough of their workspace and tools. This is one of the most reliable ways to verify claimed trade experience before an employer commits to a candidate.

Compliance note. Screening supports informed employer decision-making but does not itself guarantee selection, work-permit approval or visa outcome. Final hiring decisions remain with the employer, subject to applicable laws and government approvals.
